Christmas Traditions:

Each family has traditions that make Christmas special. Here are a few of ours. We like to spend the night with Grandma and Grandpa and in the morning, Grandpa makes his special waffles for us.

Blessing Others

One year, to teach our kids that it’s not all about me, each night leading up to Christmas, we had them draw a slip of paper out of a basket with instructions of something nice they could do to bless others.

The Jessie Tree

Another year, we did the Jessie Tree Tradition. The Jessie Tree is a creative way to learn about the story of Christmas using Jesus’s family tree. Each day of Advent, read a story about someone in Jesus’s family tree and hang an ornament on the tree. Below you can print out ornaments and devotionals for kids.

We did this with a twist. We would read about a promise of the coming Messiah and then see how it was fulfilled in Jesus. With each promise the kids would design an ornament for the tree. Each day we would work on a new promise. For example:

  • He would be the Son of David.

“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”
~ spoken to King David 2 Samuel 7:12-13.

  • He would be Born in Bethlehem.

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”
    ~ Micah 5:2

  • He would Pay the Price for our sins.

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
    ~ Isaiah 53:6

  • He will one day reign as the Prince of Peace.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
    ~ Isaiah 9:6

The Candy Cane Legend

In addition, there is a legend of the candy maker. He wanted to share the wonderful message of the shepherd king that came to take away our guilt and shame. So he invented the Candy Cane. You can view the book here:

We designed and printed cards with this story, attached a candy cane to them, and delivered them to our friends and neighbors.

The Christmas Story

Every Christmas Eve, we would gather around the nativity scene and read the story from Luke 1:1-2:21 and the kids would act it our using the nativity figures.
