Friesian Horse
The Story Behind The Painting

Racing the Storm

Feel the wild free spirit of this Friesian horse. This breed originated in Friesland in the Netherlands. Known for its large sturdy stature, it could carry a knight in full armor! Friesians are surprisingly graceful and nimble. They are also calm in the midst of turmoil, therefore they were highly prized in battle.

This watercolor painting, named “Racing the Storm”, was inspired by watching a Friesian perform at a dressage competition. It is so powerful yet fully submitted to the control of another. The Greek word for meek, πραΰς, describes this quality. It is the incredible power of a horse fully submitted to the rider’s every command. The rider is in constant contact with the horse, they almost become one. The slightest shift in weight is a cue to the horse to switch lead or change gait.

Even when the horse must endure long grueling training sessions, he is patient. He is willing to bend his will to that of the trainer, even though he knows nothing of why he must go through such trials. The beautiful performance is the fruit of such labor. In like manner, we must bend our will to the One who made us and knows the person of quality that we will become. If we do, we will know the joy of being one with our Creator and performing greater things than we could ever imagine.
